September 2008 - Moving on up

Kirsite Cove, Chris Rivett and Adrian Di-iorioIt's a quiet day at Bearing House today after our summer placements students Adrian and Kirstie cleared their desks and prepared themselves for a return to (the less stressful world of) Uni!

The undergradutes joined Uptonaway over the summer as part of the Shell Step scheme to give them some vocational experience 'of the real world' and as well as their general assistance on a variety of projects during their eight week stay, they worked hard to implement their main project - integrating a Customer Relations Management system and an a more advanced accounts package into the business systems already in place.

They will be sorely missed but we wish them well with their studies.

As part of their project Adrian and Kirstie both presented their project work to a team of judges in the regional finals, with Adrian named in the top six and narrowly missing out on a place in the national finals.

We left them alone with the video camera on their final day to record a video log (vlog) account of their stay which you'll soon be able to see.

In the meantime, please click on the link below to read their overview of their day in Lincolnshire at the regional finals.

September 2008 - Polishing the Chrome

Everyone has their favourite web browser, whether your preference is Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple's Safari. But now Google is crashing the party with Chrome, it's brand new open source web browser.

In recent years internet users understand that it's become the norm for Google to offer innovative and exciting new services to its users. Previous offerings of Google search, Gmail and Google Docs have taken the internet by storm, and left various software giants quaking in their boots.

With Chrome, Google has taken all of the best bits from rival web browsers, meaning that it's sure to appeal to millions of internet users.
At Uptonaway, a new web browser on the market means we are busy testing out all of our client's websites on Chrome to check for bugs.

Be sure to check out the new browser at www.google.co.uk/chrome.

Also, if you get chance, read Chrome's insightful explanation comic (yes, a comic!) at http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/

August 2008 - Watch out! QR codes are coming

Quick Response codes will soon be everywhere. Developed as a potential successor to bar codes, they've taken Japan by storm - homeland of the founder - and will probably do the same over here soon enough.

Several phones already come with the software installed and for those that don't (the fairly new ones at least) you can download free software to bring them up to speed.

We've already started to implement them across a number of projects so keep your eyes peeled for some extra info that will be available for 'QR eyes only'.

In the meantime, have a look at Nokia's mobilecodes website for links to downloadable readers if your phone hasn't got one and then you can find out what on earth that picture is actually saying.

For more information about QR codes, have a look on Wikipedia.

July 2008 - Freshen up

Uptonaway Media launches new seasonAfter three years we thought it was about time we practiced what we preached and re-designed uptonaway.co.uk. Like the plumbers leaking tap it's one of the last things that gets round to being sorted out.

Here though, after a bit of a wait given how busy we've been, is the new site and we hope you like it. Any comments, good or bad, will be taken on the chin so feel free to let us know what you think.

June 2008 - Heads in the clouds

Uptonaway Media is pleased to support ZSLBy sending out electronic Christmas cards every year we are able to donate the money that we would have spent on sending them in the post to charity. We're occasionally asked who we've chosen to support and last year we decided to adopt a giraffe at London Zoo, so now we thought we would give the work of ZSL a bit of a plug.

Talking about the scheme, Simon Rayner from The Zoological Society of London, told us: "The adoption of animals is very important here at ZSL. Not only does it make a unique gift idea but the money raised makes a wonderful contribution to the running costs of ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. It also goes into funding our global field conservation projects helping animals and their habitats across the world."

May 2008 - The run continues

Congratulations to Exeter City on their promotion back to The Football League. The Grecians celebrated play-off success against Cambridge United at Wembley and once we knew the Football Conference finalists we realised we were onto a (nother) winner!

Uptonaway Media's Chris Rivett with Blackpool's Adrian Forbes at Wembley in 2007We have been providing support to both club's online shops this season and regardless of who triumphed at Wembley it meant they would become the sixth sports club we've worked who to celebrate promotion in their first year of working with us. They follow in the footsteps of Luton Town (2004/05), Colchester United, Northampton Town (2005/06), Blackpool (2006/07) and Northampton Saints (2007/08). So as well as offering our range of web and media services, you might just find we're the lucky talisman you've been looking for too!

April 2008 - Dispelling the myth

I'm often asked quite where the name Uptonaway came from, the simple answer is we made it up - and it's got nothing to do with West Ham.

It is regularly mistaken that the name was contrived from a love affair with the Hammers but it is more of a play on the idea of going 'up and away' and moving forwards. That and the fact we used to live near Upton Way, the road that leads to Sixfields (now the truth is coming out).

The company colours of claret, black and white stem from the club colours of my previous employers, Northampton Town and Luton Town. So they you have it - now you know!
